Mubzi Belt

On my last trip to Kenya, I found myself doing the usual — a last-minute dash to Maasai Market at Village Market before the holiday ended. I had one mission: find a leather beaded piece to add to my accessories collection. But, as always, the market had surprises waiting for me. While hopping from stall to stall, bargaining like a pro, I stumbled upon something I’d never seen before — a brand-new style of belt.

This wasn’t your typical belt. It was made from goat skin — furry, rugged, and stitched together in uneven patches. The mismatched colors of the skin gave it this raw, edgy vibe that instantly stood out. Honestly, the imperfection is what makes it so stylish.

The seller called it a Mubzi belt (Mubzi means goat in Swahili) and told me it’s already a hit with Chinese buyers. Not too surprising — leather has always been big in Chinese fashion. Whether it’s a full-blown trend yet or just starting to take off, the Mubzi belt feels like the next cool accessory to watch in Kenyan street style.

Fun fact: goats have always played a huge role in Kenyan life — not just for food and farming, but also in traditions like dowries. Now, they’re making their mark in fashion too. From the farm to the runway, who knew goats could be this chic?

I'm a big Fan: hottest accessories for festival goers

Not exactly new, but definitely the hottest accessory you’ll want in your hand this summer: the Ankara fan. Born from bold West African prints and now rocking a Kenyan remix with Khanga fabric, these fans are serving both looks and function.

At the Beneath the Baobabs Festival, mine was a total lifesaver—cooling me down in the humid heat and doubling as the sassiest dance partner on the floor. Who knew a fan could bring this much vibe?
